Dentons opens its doors in Nicaragua

Dentons has opened an office in the Nicaraguan capital Managua as part of its growth strategy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

ManaguaAs Dentons Muñoz, the Nicaragua office joins forces with the firm’s offices in Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, and San José and Guanacaste in Costa Rica.

Together the six offices in five Central American countries position Dentons to serve the growing cross-border work into and out of the Central American region and provide high-legal services to clients around the world, the firm says.

“As the only global law firm in Central America, we are once again at the forefront of breaking new ground for the global legal community, and are uniquely positioned to serve our clients who have growing needs in this region,” Joe Andrew, Dentons’ global chairman, says.

“Given the interconnectedness of the economies of Central America with those of neighboring countries, we see real opportunity to provide a service other global firms cannot match,” according to Elliott Portnoy, Dentons’ global chief executive officer.

“With the expansion of the Central America footprint, along with this year’s combinations in the Caribbean and the announcement of our intention to combine with Larrain Rencoret Urzua in Chile, as well as previous combinations in Peru, Mexico and Colombia and a strategic alliance in Brazil, we have seen tremendous growth in cross-border work into and out of the region,” he adds.

Partner Edgard Torres will lead a six-lawyer team at the Dentons Muñoz office in Managua. Torres’ experience includes work in constitutional, civil, labour and employment law, as well as dispute resolution. He has advised local Nicaraguan clients as well as multinational and global companies with operations in the country.

The new office follows the strategic alliance the firm launched last year with Brazil’s Vella Pugliese Buosi Guidoni, as well as a combination with Gallo Barrios Pickmann in Peru, and the launch of Dentons Muñoz, Dentons López Velarde in Mexico, and Dentons Cardenas & Cardenas in Colombia.

“The addition of Edgard and his team is part of our strategy to strengthen our regional service offerings,” according to José Antonio Muñoz, Dentons’ Central America regional managing partner. “This new office is a milestone for the region, creating a transformative service for clients operating throughout the region. We plan to continue to grow in Central America, including eventually offices in Belize.”
