Garrigues appoints new head of Chile antitrust practice

Global law firm Garrigues has hired lawyer Mario Ybar to head its antitrust practice in Chile, and who had previously worked at the country’s National Economic Prosecutor’s Office (FNE).

Mario Ybar of GarriguesMario Ybar (pictured) has spent his entire professional career at the FNE, where he held various positions during his 15-year stint with the Chilean antitrust authority, most notably as deputy national economic prosecutor (2015-2018) and acting national economic prosecutor (2018).

Prior to that, Ybar was head of the FNE’s mergers division and deputy head of the legal division. Ybar joins Garrigues following the end of the statutory period of ineligibility.

Ybar qualified as a lawyer from the Universidad de Chile and holds a master’s degree in antitrust law from University College London.

Ybar participated in the design and implementation of the concentration control regulations, in force since July 2017.

Javier Ybáñez, a senior partner at Garrigues and the partner in charge of the Latin America practice, said Ybar’s addition is “a magnificent boost to our substantial antitrust practice, and will enable us to enhance the support we offer to our clients, both in Chile and at a regional level”.

Garrigues has offices in 13 countries, with 18 offices in Spain, two in Portugal, and, in Latin America, it has a presence in Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru.
