The September issue of The Latin American Lawyer is now available for free download.

Cover News LA0919BFor the latest issue, we talked to Claudia Benavides (pictured), who was recently appointed as Baker McKenzie’s head of the firm’s Global Dispute Resolution Group, who is the first female lawyer to hold this position at the firm and previously led the firm’s Latin America dispute resolution desk.

In the interview, Benavides talks about the challenges regarding dispute resolution in Latin America and globally, and of the challenges of being a woman in the legal profession, which remains dominated by men.

For our in-house focus, we travel to Colombia to interview Juan Pablo García Henao, legal director at Colombian real estate developer Apiros, who talks about the importance of relying on local law firms’ expertise to navigate the country’s legislation. And from Peru, Renzo J. Salazar Vallejo, director of the Peruvian committee of the World Energy Council, argues that global firms often offer a better option for in-house teams given their experience in international financing.

Law firms across Latin America are undergoing expansion, hiring new lawyers and entering new jurisdictions by combining with local firms, and the latest issue of the magazine highlights some of the many recent examples of such moves, such as law firm Morrison & Foerster’s addition of more partners to its Miami office to strengthen its Latin America desk, Brazilian firm TozziniFreire’s addition of 10 partners to meet the growing demand for legal services in the country, and Central American firm García & Bodán’s move into Costa Rica to consolidate its presence in the isthmus.
