Bolivia postpones presidential elections

Bolivia’s interim government has announced the presidential elections scheduled for May 3 will be postponed for 14 days, but without setting a new date for the vote.

Jeanine Ánez interim president of BoliviaThe interim government has also imposed a mandatory countrywide quarantine for 14 days to stem the spread of coronavirus in the country. 

The country’s electoral tribunal said it would work together with all of the country´s political parties and organisations to determine a new date for the election.

Interim president Jeanine Áñez (pictured) said the quarantine measure, which began March 22, would extend until April 4, and which follow the closure of the country’s borders and the cancellation of all international flights.

Áñez said supermarkets, hospitals, banks and pharmacies would continue to operate as normal during the quarantine, and that the government would provide cash payments to needy families with children beginning in April.
