Mexico elected to UN Security Council

Mexico has been elected to a seat on the United Nations Security Council for a two-year term, along with India, Ireland and Norway, while a new round of voting will take place on Thursday among the UN’s 193 member nations to fill the last vacant seat after no clear winner emerged.

Mexico City's ZócaloMexico and India were elected unopposed. Kenya and Djibouti were competing for the final seat, but there was no clear winner.

To ensure geographical representation, seats are allocated to regional groups. Candidate nations need to win the support of more than two thirds of the UN General Assembly, even if they are running unopposed.

The new members will start their two-year term on the 15-member council on 1 January 2021.

Mexico was last a member of the UN Security Council from 2009-10.
