TozziniFreire Advogados announces expansion in its Litigation and Tax areas

TozziniFreire Advogados’ Litigation, Arbitration, Mediation, and Tax practice areas now feature two new partners.

Partner Elias Marques will act in the Litigation, Arbitration, and Mediation practices. With over 20 years’ experience in the private sector, he is highly skilled in strategic litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution. His background as a general counsel of large legal departments in the energy, fuel, lubricants, infrastructure, agribusiness, and gas industries qualifies him to assist clients to deal with complex challenges of corporate law.

Graduate of the Law School of USP (University of São Paulo), he holds postdoctoral degrees in Civil Procedural Law from the University of Lisbon/Portugal, in 2015, and from the University of Coimbra/Portugal, in 2019. Elias is also a university professor of Civil Procedural Law, having several books and articles published.

The firm’s Tax team welcomes partner Renata Emery to co-head the area along with Gustavo Nygaard. Throughout her over 20 years of career, she has been working on the consultancy of large corporate transactions, reorganizations, and tax planning, having deep knowledge of International Tax Law.

Renata is a graduate of the Law School of UCAM (Universidade Candido Mendes) and holds a postgraduate degree in Accounting from FGV (Fundação Getulio Vargas). In 2020, she was a professor of the extension course on Strategic Tax Litigation at EMERJ (Rio de Janeiro Magistracy School).

According to Fernando Serec, CEO of TozziniFreire Advogados, the new partners come to meet the market needs arising from the current economic situation. Furthermore, Renata Emery joins three other Tax partners hired last year, strengthening the growth strategy of the practice, which comprises professionals with diverse expertise, both in direct and indirect taxes, as well as from different business industries, commerce and services, including digital platforms.

With the entry of Renata, the firm now has 32 female partners out of 87 partners, equivalent to 37%. “The female presence in the firm’s leadership expresses our commitment to the dissemination of a diverse and inclusive culture at all levels of the organization”, Fernando Serec highlights. From the 1,062 total TozziniFreire’s employees, considering legal and administrative staff, 661 are women, which corresponds to 62%.
