Jones Day advises on major consolidation in Mexico’s aviation sector
Jones Day has advised the Mexican Ministry of the Navy (Secretaría de Marina) in the restructuring of the country’s airport infrastructure, culminating in the merger of three key state-run airport operators—Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México (GACM), Servicios Aeroportuarios de la Ciudad de México (SACM), and Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México (AICM). The result is the creation of a new entity: Grupo Aeroportuario Marina.
In a move for Mexico’s aviation infrastructure, the Ministry of the Navy (Secretaría de Marina) has concluded the merger of three key state-run airport entities—Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México (GACM), Servicios Aeroportuarios de la Ciudad de México (SACM), and Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México (AICM)—forming a new consolidated entity: Grupo Aeroportuario Marina.
The move in Mexico’s aviation infrastructure was led legally by Jones Day, which advised the Ministry through GACM on all aspects of the complex consolidation process. The firm’s counsel covered corporate governance, regulatory compliance, aeronautical matters, taxation, and labor law.
As a result of the merger, Grupo Aeroportuario Marina will now serve as the concessionaire of Benito Juárez Mexico City International Airport (AICM)—one of Latin America’s busiest hubs. It will also hold the concessions for Guaymas, Ciudad Obregón, Ciudad del Carmen, Matamoros, Loreto, and Colima airports. Additionally, the newly formed group retains a stake in both Toluca International Airport and Cuernavaca International Airport.
