Lawyer José Afonso da Silva dies
Lawyer José Afonso da Silva (pictured) died on Tuesday, 25, at the age of 100. Considered one of the greatest names in Brazilian law, his career shaped generations, consolidating a legacy that remains alive in the country’s doctrine, jurisprudence, and institutional culture.
A prominent jurist in the field of constitutional law, José Afonso da Silva is recognized as the most cited author by the Federal Supreme Court (STF). His constitutional interpretation, which values social justice and fundamental rights, has greatly influenced the way the Court interprets the Constitution and applies its principles.
Born on April 30, 1925, in Pompéu, Minas Gerais, he moved to São Paulo in 1947. It was at the traditional Largo de São Francisco Law School that he built much of his career, faced challenges, and trained generations of professionals, passing on his knowledge to countless students. In addition to his legal work, he left behind works in other genres, including novels and various texts, and participated in significant moments in the country’s history.
