Ary Mattos Filho dies at age 85
Lawyer Ary Oswaldo Mattos Filho died on Monday night (December 1) due to lung problems at the age of 85. Known for his work in the capital markets, he was a founding partner of one of the largest law firms in Brazil, Mattos Filho, which bears his surname.
He was known as one of the most influential jurists in business law and capital markets in Brazil. Dr. Ary was a lawyer, professor, researcher, and institutional leader, playing a central role in the development of business law, regulatory modernization, and academic training.
With a doctorate in Tax Law from the University of São Paulo (USP) since 1973 and a post-doctorate from Harvard Law School, Ary Oswaldo built a remarkable career in both the public and private sectors, as well as in academia. He was president of the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM) — during which time the Brazilian stock market was opened to foreign investors —, member of the National Monetary Council (CMN), president of the Federal Commission for Fiscal Reform, and judge of the Administrative Court of Taxes and Fees of São Paulo (TIT).
He also served on the board of directors of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and was a director and professor at the FGV-SP Law School and School of Administration.
