Carey strengthens with the appointment of 4 new partners

Carey has announced the appointment of 4 new partners to strengthen its litigation and environmental practice areas, with the addition of Mónica Pérez, Roberto Villaseca, Julio Recordon and Manuel José Barros.

Mónica Pérez (pictured left) is part of the Litigation, Arbitration, Insolvency, Bankruptcy and Restructuring and Consumer Law and Advertising groups. She is a lawyer from the Catholic University, from where she graduated with highest distinction, and holds an LL.M. from the University of California, Berkeley. She is admitted to practice in both Chile and Alabama, USA. With more than 13 years of experience, her practice focuses on civil and commercial litigation, domestic and international arbitration, in diverse matters, including contractual and tort liability, corporate law, consumer protection class actions, unfair competition, distribution contracts, warranties and environmental law, among others. She is a lecturer in the private law department of the Universidad de Chile, where she teaches Civil Law and in the Postgraduate Diploma in Consumer Law. In 2017, she worked as a foreign associate in the Litigation and Arbitration group of the Spanish law firm, Pérez-Llorca in Madrid.

Roberto Villaseca (pictured centre, left) is part of the Litigation, Arbitration, Insolvency, Bankruptcy and Restructuring groups. He is a lawyer from the Catholic University and holds an LL.M. from Columbia University, from where he graduated with honours. He is admitted to practice both in Chile and in the State of New York. With 14 years of experience, his practice focuses on civil and commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution, both before ordinary and arbitral courts, insolvency and bankruptcy and international trade disputes. He has been a professor of civil law at Universidad Católica since 2016. He is a founding member of the Turnaround Management Association in Chile (TMA), a prestigious global insolvency association. Between 2015 and 2016 he worked as an international associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York.

Julio Recordon (pictured centre, right) is part of the environmental practice. He is a lawyer from the Catholic University of Valparaíso and holds a Diploma in Administrative Law from the same university. His practice focuses on environmental law, including advising on the Environmental Impact Assessment System, audits, waste management, sectorial permits and administrative and judicial procedures and litigation related to all kinds of activities and projects. He is the author of the book “Régimen Jurídico de los Permisos Ambientales Sectoriales”, published this year by Ediciones Jurídicas de Santiago and professor of the Diploma in Construction Law at the Universidad de Los Andes. He was an advisor to the Cabinet in the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic between 2016 and 2017 and a lawyer in the Legal Division of the Ministry of the Environment between 2010 and 2014.

Manuel José Barros (pictured right) is part of the environmental practice. His work focuses on environmental law and includes advising on the Environmental Impact Assessment System, audits, administrative proceedings and lawsuits. In addition, he advises clients, especially from an environmental perspective, including the generation of environmental strategies for the implementation and development of all kinds of projects, and also on regulatory aspects related to natural resources. He holds a law degree from the Catholic University, a diploma in Administrative Law from the Catholic University of Valparaíso and a Master’s degree in Environmental Policy and Regulation from The London School of Economics and Political Science. He is a member of the Joint Public Advisory Committee for Environmental Cooperation between Chile and Canada, and a professor of Environmental Law for the Diploma in Environmental Law and Sustainability at the Catholic University and the Master in Natural Resources and Environment at the Finis Terrae University. Between 2015 and 2016 he was a foreign associate at Eversheds in London.

With these new appointments Carey now has more than 270 professionals in its legal area and 44 partners.
