Cuatrecasas appoints two new partners
Cuatrecasas has announced the appointment of Michel Diban and Jaime Vargas as new partners in the Corporate and M&A areas of the Santiago office and in the Tax area of the Bogotá office, respectively.
These appointments were made following their approval at the firm’s Extraordinary General Partners’ Meeting, held in Barcelona (Spain), and ratify the firm’s commitment to consolidate its position as a leader in all the jurisdictions in which it is present in Latin America.
Michel Diban (pictured left) has 18 years of experience advising clients on complex transactions, with a focus on M&A operations, particularly in the energy, technology and infrastructure sectors. In recent years, he has led the advice on the acquisition, sale, merger and restructuring of Chilean and international companies, both in Chile and in other Latin American jurisdictions, including Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Peru. He is a magna cum laude lawyer from the Universidad de los Andes in Chile and holds an LL.M. from Northwestern University in Chicago. He is also a professor of the Master of Laws program at the Universidad de los Andes. Prior to joining the firm, he worked as a foreign associate at the Brazilian firm Lobo & de Rizzo Advogados, as well as a partner at Morales & Besa.
Jaime Vargas (pictured right) is a graduate of the Universidad Externado de Colombia, with a specialisation in Taxation from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (Itam). He has more than 30 years of experience as a tax advisor, especially in mergers and acquisitions, national and international tax planning, wealth management and taxation applied to specific sectors such as energy, oil, gas, among others. In addition, Vargas is a professor of tax law at the Externado and serves as president of the Academic Commission of the Colombian Institute of Tax Law (ICDT). He previously worked as a tax managing partner at firms such as Arthur Andersen & Co., Deloitte and EY Colombia, as well as a principal lawyer at Baker & McKenzie and as Corporate and International Tax Manager at Coca-Cola FEMSA in Mexico.
