ECIJA adds Miguel Ángel Margáin as a partner

ECIJA Mexico consolidates its TMT and Intellectual Property area with the incorporation of Miguel Ángel Margáin (pictured) as partner, who will lead the area with the knowledge of his more than 30 years of experience.

The new partner focuses his practice on intellectual property and innovation protection and exploitation issues at national and international level, as well as an outstanding specialisation in the technology and entertainment (TMT) sector, both in the private and public sector.

In the private sector, he was president of the Mexican Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AMPPI); vice-president and spokesperson of the Intellectual Property Rights Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico (AmCham), active member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and of the Inter-American Trademark Association (ASIPI).

In addition, in the public sector, he was appointed director general of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), while he also served as chairman of the APEC Expert Group on Intellectual Property Rights, chaired the Madrid Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and participated in the negotiation rounds of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada, known as T-MEC. As legacies of his tenure, we can point out that he has promoted and achieved the most important reform of the trademark system, the total digital transformation of the IMPI and the complete draft of the new Mexican patent and trademark legislation in accordance, above all, with the T-MEC.

The new incorporation of Miguel Ángel Margáin is announced after ECIJA Mexico announced last March and February the opening of the new financial Advisory business line and the Environment and Sustainability practice. Likewise, this year the firm announced an international alliance with the Anglo-German law firm Taylor Wessing, leader in TMT and Intellectual Property in Europe. These moves are part of ECIJA’s expansion and consolidation plan as a full-service firm in Mexico and leader in LATAM. With this move, ECIJA’s Mexico City office now has a total of 9 partners.
