German law firm Oppenhoff appoints Chilean junior partner

German law firm Oppenhoff & Partner has announced the appointment of new partners with effect from 1 January, among them Chilean lawyer Edder Cifuentes, a member of the Chilean Bar Association and the Rechtsanwaltskammer Köln, who has been promoted to junior partner.

Cifuentes (pictured) specialises mainly in mergers and acquisitions as well as venture capital, and has particular expertise in the areas energy and infrastructure. Recent transactions in which he has participated include advising Austrian Solar on the development of the Huatacondo utility-scale solar power generation project in northern Chile, and advising the New Zealand food company Manuka Health on the acquisition of Germany’s Neuseelandhaus GmbH.

He graduated from the University of Chile and holds a master of law and business from WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management/Bucerius Hochschule für Rechtswissenschaft, in Hamburg, and where he is currently pursuing his doctoral studies.

Cifuentes joined Oppenhoff & Partner in 2014, working with partner Alf Baars in the firm’s corporate and M&A group as well as at its Latin American Desk. Baars, who has extensive professional experience related to Latin America and leads the Latin American desk at Oppenhoff & Partner.

In 2018 Cifuentes was acknowledged by Chambers Global as the only “Foreign Expert” for the Chilean market in Germany.

“We are thrilled with this appointment and we believe it confirms the good work we have done at our Latin America Desk over recent years. To my understanding, this makes Edder the first Chilean lawyer to hold this position in a large and traditional German law firm,” Baars said.

Oppenhoff & Partner has offices in Frankfurt, Cologne and Hamburg.
