IAB Director joins ILA International Arbitration Committee

The Brazilian Bar Association (IAB) celebrated the appointment of its Director of International Relations, Paulo Fernando Pinheiro Machado (pictured), to join the prestigious Conflict of Laws in International Arbitration Committee of the International Law Association (ILA).

The appointment, confirmed by the foreign institution, recognizes his professional excellence and expertise in international law, marking a moment of great relevance in his personal career, as well as a source of pride for Casa de Montezuma.

Pinheiro Machado is responsible for chairing the IAB’s International Law Commission, as well as being a member of the Mediation, Conciliation, and Arbitration Commission. The Committee, composed of only 50 members from different countries, has an extremely important mandate: to address challenges related to conflicts of laws in international arbitration, a crucial field for global legal harmonization. Its activities include drafting recommendations that influence the formulation of international treaties, developing legal standards, and creating soft law instruments.

The International Law Association, founded in 1873, is one of the most respected organizations dedicated to the study and development of international law. Headquartered in London and with members in more than 60 countries, the ILA plays a key role in promoting academic debate and formulating principles that shape global legal practice. Membership on one of its committees is an internationally recognized honor reserved for professionals of exceptional competence.

Paulo Fernando Pinheiro Machado is a career diplomat, jurist, arbitrator, and mediator with extensive experience in highly complex international issues. With a history of commitment to the values of human dignity, he was awarded the Luiz Gama Medal in 2022.
