Machado Meyer advises on bidding process for cemeteries in SP

Machado Meyer advised Atena Consortium, formed by the companies Atena Participações, owned by Grupo Zelo, Engeform Engenharia, and Construtora Aterpa, within the scope of Competition No. EC/001/2022/SGM-SEDP, conducted by the City Hall of the Municipality of São Paulo through the Executive Secretariat for Privatization and Partnerships, which purpose is the concession of management, operation, maintenance, exploration, revitalization, and expansion services of the 22 (twenty-two) public cemeteries and crematoria, and the provision of funeral services in the city of São Paulo.

The Atena Consortium presented the winning financial proposal for Block 1 of the public notice, formed by the cemeteries: Consolação, Quarta Parada, Santana, Tremembé, Vila Formosa I and II, and Vila Mariana.

This is a strategic operation for the City Hall of the Municipality of São Paulo, which has been trying to develop the project since 2017. The 25-year concession for the 22 cemeteries and crematoria should generate approximately BRL 1.2 billion in economic benefits for the city, according to municipal management. It is also strategic for the Consortium, which has extensive experience in managing cemeteries and providing funeral services, to expand the companies’ operations and achieve greater consolidation in their relationship with the public sector.

The transaction value was R$ 1.5 billion.

Machado Meyer relied on led partner Jose Virgilio Lopes Enei (pictured) and lawyers Fernanda Armelim Gonzaga Quiroga Mosquera and Larissa Santiago Gebrim.
