Maranhão & Menezes starts its activities with a focus on AI
Maranhão & Menezes Advogados will focus on digital law, with an emphasis on issues related to Artificial Intelligence. The firm is led by partners Juliano Maranhão, Josie Menezes and Bernardo Fico (pictured from left to right), from Opice Blum e Bruno Advogados Associados.
The firm started with six other professionals in addition to the three partners. In addition to the practices mentioned above, M&M Advogados will also offer clients legal advice on Administrative Law, Competition and Data Protection.
Juliano Maranhão is a professor at USP’s Faculty of Law, a member of the executive committee of the International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law (IAAIL) and one of the founders of Lawgorithm, an association focused on research into Artificial Intelligence and Law. He has been a member of various committees at the National Council of Justice on the regulation and implementation of data protection policies in the courts and in the extrajudicial sphere, as well as being a member of the Senate Committee responsible for drafting Bill 2338/23, known as the Artificial Intelligence Regulatory Framework. He is also director of the Legal Grounds Institute, a think tank dedicated to multidisciplinary projects and studies on digitization, regulation of digital services, digital public policies for the media, education in new media and protection of personal data.
Josie de Menezes is a specialist in Regulatory, Competition and Digital Law with a Master’s degree in Administrative Law from PUC-SP. She is the coordinator of the Legal Grounds Institute’s Infrastructure unit and has experience in the public sector, having worked as direct legal advisor to the President of the Superior Court of Justice and the Secretary General of the Federal Justice Council on issues relating to bidding processes and drafts of strategic contracts, related to the contracting of works, services and purchases; examination of draft covenants and technical cooperation agreements for the entire Federal Justice System.
Bernardo Fico has a degree from the University of São Paulo, a Master’s in International Human Rights Law from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law (USA) and a specialist in Digital Law from UERJ. Bernardo has worked at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights advising on the drafting of judgments and provisional measures; at the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) and at Bluhm Legal Clinic defending social minorities.
