Mexico nominates Jesús Seade to head WTO
Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has nominated Jesús Seade Kuri, the economist who led the country’s negotiatios towards a new free agreement , the USMCA, with Canada and the US, to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Seade is currently under secretary for the Americas at Mexico’s Foreign Ministry (SRE). He has previously worked as a university professor in China and Hong Kong.
If elected, Seade (pictured) would replace the current WTO director general, Roberto Azevêdo, who has announced he will step down on 31 August 2020.
The period for nominations to the post closes on July 8.
Seade faces competition for the post from Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who has been nominated by Nigeria, according to the WTO’s website.
