Mijares, Angoitia, Cortés y Fuentes strengthens compliance and environmental practices with new appointments
Amid a wave of regulatory change, Mijares, Angoitia, Cortés y Fuentes has announced the appointment of Daniela Ortega Sosa (pictured center)and Paulina Fabara Laphan (pictured left) as counsels and heads of the Regulatory and Environmental Compliance areas, respectively. In addition, Gabriel Calvillo (pictured right), who has served as counsel since 2018, will continue to head the compliance and criminal litigation, corporate crimes, and environmental litigation practice areas.
This strategic decision reflects the firm’s approach to delivering comprehensive, specialized legal counsel designed to anticipate and meet the complex regulatory, sustainability, and risk management challenges faced by companies operating in Mexico and abroad.
According to the firm, the changes come at a time when businesses are confronting heightened regulatory scrutiny. The U.S. government’s decision to designate certain drug cartels as terrorist organizations has escalated compliance demands relating to criminal law, corporate governance, and national security, with cross-sector implications. Beginning next year, publicly listed companies will be required to disclose sustainability information under international standards, amid mounting regulatory pressures and global scrutiny.
Recent environmental law reforms in Mexico have expanded the inspection authority of regulators. Combined with strengthened domestic and international environmental policies, these reforms create a stricter framework where preventive compliance measures are essential to mitigating legal and operational risk.
The three partners bring strong expertise to meet these challenges:
Daniela Ortega Sosa is widely recognized for her work in risk management, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance. She has led global programs on anti-money laundering, anti-corruption, and business ethics for leading corporations.
Paulina Fabara Laphan is a prominent environmental lawyer with over 20 years of experience shaping sustainability strategies, energy transition initiatives, and circular economy projects across Mexico and Latin America.
Gabriel Calvillo has built a robust track record in criminal compliance, corporate defense, and environmental litigation, having previously served in senior roles at the Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Environmental Enforcement Agency.
With over 30 years of experience, Mijares, Angoitia, Cortés y Fuentes is one of Mexico’s leading law firms, offering full-service legal counsel across financial transactions, capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, competition law, tax, litigation, energy, and more.
