PIMO: new criminal law boutique opens in São Paulo
Débora Perez (pictured center), Mariana Ortiz (pictured right), and João Imperia (pictured left) announced the opening of Perez, Imperia, and Ortiz Advogados (PIMO), a new criminal law boutique based in São Paulo.
After years of working together as partners at ToficSimantob, Perez and Ortiz, the trio is embarking on a new project, which will focus exclusively on criminal law, with a special emphasis on corporate crimes involving individuals and legal entities throughout Brazil.
Among the new firm’s unique features is the combination of complementary profiles of its founders, who bring together experience in both the private and public sectors, combined with solid academic training in Brazil and abroad.
About the partners:
Débora Perez Dias has been working in the criminal area for over 20 years. She was a partner at Tofic Simantob, Perez, and Ortiz for 18 years, during which time she worked on some of the firm’s most emblematic cases. She has extensive experience in defending clients in complex and high-profile investigations. She has a postgraduate degree in Corporate Criminal Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) and is a specialist in Economic Criminal Law from the Institute of European Economic Criminal Law at the University of Coimbra. She is a member of the Institute for the Defense of the Right to Defense (IDDD) and the Brazilian Institute of Criminal Sciences (IBCCRIM).
Mariana Tranchesi Ortiz has been practicing law for over 20 years. She was a partner at Tofic Simantob, Perez e Ortiz Advogados for eight years. She holds a Master’s degree in Criminal Law from the University of São Paulo (USP) and is a specialist in Criminal Law from the University of Barcelona and Pompeu Fabra University. She has taught as a guest lecturer and supervised final projects in the Graduate Program in Economic Criminal Law at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation Law School in São Paulo (FGV/Law). She is the author of the book Concurso de agentes nos delitos especiais (Ed. IBCCRIM) and is associated with the Brazilian Institute of Criminal Sciences (IBCCRIM).
João Henrique Imperia was a Public Defender for the State of São Paulo for 14 years, where, in addition to conducting thousands of criminal hearings, hundreds of oral arguments, and jury trials, he also served as Criminal Advisor to the Public Defender’s Office and Coordinator of the Second Instance Center (TJ-SP) and Superior Courts (STJ and STF). In 2021, he became a partner at Tofic Simantob, Perez e Ortiz, where he remained for four years. He holds a Master’s degree in Constitutional Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) and an international diploma in human rights from the Center for Studies of the State Attorney General’s Office, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, the Heidelberg Center for Latin America, and PUC-SP. He is associated with the Brazilian Institute of Criminal Sciences (IBCCRIM) and the Institute for the Defense of the Right to Defense (IDDD), a member of the Special Commission for Defensive Investigation of the OAB/SP, and a member of the Legal Department of FIESP (DEJUR).
