Basham appoints 4 new partners

Basham Ringe y Correa has announced the promotion of 4 new partners in the Mexico City office: Luis Álvarez from Labour, Norberto Ruiz from Tax, Santiago Villanueva from Social Security and Santiago Zubikarai from Intellectual Property.

Luis Álvarez (pictured left) joined the firm in 2016. He holds a law degree from the Universidad Intercontinental with Honourable Mention in Labour Law from the Universidad Panamericana. He has more than 15 years of experience in labour consulting and litigation. His practice focuses on advising and guiding local and foreign companies in the integral design of their labor structure, including labor contracts, corporate policies, codes of conduct, confidentiality, non-competition, flexible incentives, as well as the implementation of emotional salaries, among others, as well as following up on complex litigation. Previously, he worked in several law firms, such as Álvarez Salinas Abogados, Thompson & Knight Abogados, DLA Piper Mexico, and Baker & McKenzie.

Norberto Ruiz (pictured centre, left) is part of Basham since 2013. He holds a law degree from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Tec de Monterrey) and a master’s degree in tax law from the Universidad Panamericana. He is a prominent tax lawyer with more than 13 years of experience in tax matters. His practice has specialised in tax controversy and litigation, providing strategic advice to clients from various sectors, such as investment funds, mining, pharmaceuticals, automotive industry and consumer products companies.

Santiago Villanueva (pictured centre, right) first joined Basham in 2019. He holds a law degree from Universidad La Salle, a master’s degree in business law from Universidad La Salle and a specialisation in tax law from the Universidad de Estudios de Posgrado en Derecho. With 27 years of experience in Social Security Law, his professional practice has been developed in planning, consulting, strategy and defence of companies before the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) and Instituto del Fondo Nacional para la Vivienda de los Trabajadores (INFONAVIT), particularly in matters of coactive collection (seizures), cancellation of employer registrations, company classification, occupational hazards, disability certificates, employer audits, payment of contributions and amortization of housing loans, among others.

Santiago Zubikarai (pictured right) has been a member of the firm since 2009. He holds a law degree from the Universidad Anáhuac México Norte, with the Egel Excellence Award, a Master of Laws degree from the University of Notre Dame du Lac and passed the NY bar exam. Santiago has more than 13 years of experience. He has developed his professional practice in the area of intellectual property, dedicated to activities such as the registration of trademarks and copyrights, preparation and review of contracts relating to intellectual property rights and complex litigation before administrative and jurisdictional authorities in relation to the protection and defence of intellectual property rights and providing opinions and conducting audits on intellectual property matters.

These appointments bring the firm’s total number of partners to 34.
