BU appoints Carlos Fradique as new managing partner

Brigard Urrutia has announced the appointment of Carlos Fradique-Méndez (pictured) as the firm’s new Managing Partner, elected unanimously, effective April 2023.

Carlos, who joined BU in 1996, is a recognised expert in financial law and has led the development of complex financial structures and instruments in matters such as project and infrastructure finance, capital markets, PE/VC funds, asset management and financial derivatives, as well as in the successful resolution of complex disputes in the local and international market, among others.

He is a lawyer from Universidad del Rosario and holds a postgraduate degree in Financial Law from Universidad de los Andes, an LL.M. in Commercial Law from the University of Ottawa, and an LL.M. in International Banking and Finance from Boston University. He previously served as Chief Legal Officer of the Colombian Ministry of Finance/Treasury, as a member of the AMV Disciplinary Tribunal and as a Director of several leading financial institutions. He is a licensed lawyer in Colombia and a member of the New York Bar.

Carlos has pioneered the design and structuring of many innovative financial products and instruments and the implementation of rules and regulations in the local and regional market, including the first and largest REIT in the Andean region, the first local bond issue covered by a supranational issuer, the local framework contract for private and public derivatives, the first hedge fund, the first corporate perpetual bond in Latin America and the first subordinated bond of a Colombian financial institution.
