CIAM and WWA LatAm collaborate for diversity in international arbitration

The Madrid International Arbitration Centre and Women Way in Arbitration LatAm have signed an agreement to promote diversity in international arbitration

 The Centro Internacional de Arbitraje de Madrid (CIAM) and Women Way in Arbitration (WWA Latam) have signed a collaboration agreement to promote diversity in international arbitration, as part of one of CIAM’s initiatives in its commitment to diversity, mainly gender diversity.

The co-founders and directors of WWA Latam, Verónica Sandler Obregón (pictured top left) and María Inés Corrá (pictured bottom left), mentioned respectively that: “WWA and CIAM find a communion in their objectives for the fight for diversity in international arbitration,” as well as “Women Way in Arbitration Latam and CIAM share the firm conviction that the convergence of conceptions and diversity allow a better solution of disputes involving parties with diversity of origin, culture, language as it happens, by definition, in international arbitration.”

This agreement encompasses different promotional actions, such as the event that both institutions have organised on international arbitration and diversity as drivers of development in the Ibero-American region. At the meeting, José Antonio Caínzos (pictured top right), president of CIAM said that “this is only the first step of a long and fruitful collaboration between CIAM and WWA LATAM.”

During the seminar, other topics discussed included the contribution of the Spanish-speaking world to international arbitration, arbitration and the tangible benefits of diversity, the importance of language in dispute resolution and the importance of Spanish, as well as the new challenges facing the sector.

In a subsequent interview, Mélanie Riofrio Piché (pictured bottom right), secretary general of CIAM, highlighted the importance of CIAM’s alliance with WWA Latam “for the visibility it has given to Latin American female talent in international arbitration […] the CIAM secretariat is making an important effort to promote diversity, particularly in the appointment of arbitrators”, but that “this effort also requires the collaboration of others involved in the appointments, such as the parties, co-arbitrators and lawyers”.

Women Way in Arbitration (WWA Latam) is an organisation created with the aim of promoting greater participation of Ibero-American women lawyers in international arbitration in order to strengthen gender and geographical diversity to achieve a fuller and more representative justice for society.
