Barcelos joins IAB as new member

Attorney, professor, and jurist Guilherme Barcelos has been inducted as a member of the Instituto dos Advogados Brasileiros (IAB), the oldest legal institution in the Americas. The ceremony took place at the historic Casa de Montezuma in Rio de Janeiro, bringing together representatives of the national legal community.

Barcelos’ nomination was co-signed by Vânia Aieta, president of the IAB’s Electoral Law Commission, and by former Minister of Justice Torquato Jardim. In endorsing the appointment, Aieta highlighted Barcelos’ academic, professional, and intellectual background, describing his arrival at the IAB as “a breath of renewal and intellectual vigor.”

Barcelos holds a doctorate in Constitutional Law from the Instituto Brasileiro de Ensino, Desenvolvimento e Pesquisa (IDP/DF) and a master’s degree in Public Law from the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos/RS). He is also a specialist in Electoral Law. With his induction, he joins an institution that, over nearly two centuries of existence, has brought together some of the most prominent figures in Brazilian legal history.

In his inaugural address, Barcelos underscored the IAB’s historical significance and the role of legal institutions in the face of contemporary social, political, and technological transformations. He described the IAB as an essential space for critical reflection, intellectual production, and the defense of the Democratic Rule of Law.

Barcelos also drew attention to the challenges posed to the law in a context of rapid technological change, stressing the importance of preserving fundamental guarantees and democratic institutions. He stated that the defense of constitutionality, individual rights, and civil liberties goes beyond professional legal practice and constitutes a civic duty. Closing his remarks, he reaffirmed his commitment to contributing to the legal debates promoted by the institution and to advancing constitutional values.
