Cuatrecasas has announced the appointment of Sebastián Leyton (pictured) as a new partner in the Energy practice in the Santiago office.

“Becoming part of a major international law firm like Cuatrecasas, which has a clear and ambitious commitment to Chile and the region, is a tremendous professional recognition that I am proud of. They have committed to a project that consists of developing and establishing an energy and infrastructure practice, in a context in which the energy industry faces great challenges in the coming years,” commented the new partner on his appointment.

Sebastián has more than 13 years of experience in projects in the Chilean energy, infrastructure and electricity sectors. Leyton has just left the Legal Division of the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels, where he spent three years leading a team of more than 25 professionals in the main oversight institution of the country’s energy industry. Previously, he also worked at Cariola Diez Pérez-Cotapos, Morales & Besa and at the international law firm Milbank LLP.

Throughout his career he has advised on electricity projects, including international development, acquisition and financing transactions, both conventional and renewable generation, electricity distribution and transmission, having worked in Chilean and North American law firms, as well as sanctioning processes, administrative litigation, participation in legislative projects, authorisation of electricity concessions and green hydrogen projects.

Leyton holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Chile and a Master of Laws degree from the University of California, Berkley – School of Law (USA) and a certificate in Clean Energy & Technology from the same University. He also holds a diploma in Natural Resources and Energy Law from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
